The External Affairs team within Fortescue’s Global Sustainability and External Affairs Department plays a critical role in developing and implementing government advocacy, approval, and stakeholder engagement strategies. These initiatives are essential for strengthening relationships and fostering operational efficiency and growth in key areas such as decarbonization, green energy transition and technology, green iron, and mine development.

 

You will support and implement a comprehensive range of government relations activities under the direction of the Senior Manager, External Affairs APAC. You will play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing Fortescue's relationships in Canberra, coordinating attendance at key events in the Capital, gathering information on critical issues, and keeping the External Affairs APAC team informed.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Collaborate with the APAC External Affairs team to provide high-quality advice to Fortescue executives on strategies for advancing regulatory approvals and policy development that align with business objectives.
  • Partner with the Director, Senior Strategic Adviser, and Senior Manager External Affairs to develop government and regulatory engagement strategies to meet business goals.
  • Support the Director and Senior Manager in securing senior executive approval for strategies and implementing enterprise-wide initiatives.
  • Prepare comprehensive briefing materials for Fortescue leaders and executives on policy and regulatory issues to facilitate government engagement.
  • Coordinate meetings and advocacy engagement programs/schedules in Canberra and for elected officials visiting Fortescue sites.
  • Prepare and obtain internal approvals for written documents supporting government engagement, including letters, submissions, policy reviews, presentations, and internal communications materials.
  • Work autonomously to manage day-to-day reactive government engagement within the APAC External Affairs team to support broader Fortescue business needs.
  • Maintain records of engagement with government representatives..
  • Represent Fortescue at meetings with government representatives, industry associations, stakeholders, and at conferences and business engagement events.

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Significant, demonstratable experience working in a related role with the Commonwealth government and/or regulatory processes.
  • Thorough understanding of Australian, State, and Territory government structures and processes.
  • A tertiary qualification in a related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Experience presenting to, advising, and securing approval from executives.
  • A track record of achieving key outcomes from engagement with government policymakers.
  • Proven ability to work independently and progress streams of work to a high standard.
  • Experience in contributing to strategies for government advocacy programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a collaborative team member.
  • High-level interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to deliver results under pressure on multiple projects with tight deadlines.
  • Highly developed administrative and computer skills, particularly in the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience with Stakeholder Relationship Management systems is desirable.
