The Superintendent Exploratory Mine Operations will work directly with local working teams, client mining and planning managers and service contractors. They will provide specialised guidance and advice including recommendations on how to efficiently drill and blast, extract ore, reduce mining and logistics carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency, interface with mine planning and maintenance planning, while implementing environmentally friendly mining technologies and processes.
Their primary objective will be to design and refine strategies that enable clients to ramp up a greenfield exploratory mine to showcase how to decarbonise mining operations of a single asset, while deploying productivity and efficiency standards in line with Fortescue ways of work.
Key Responsibilities
Working closely with Fortescue’s Green Mining Manager and operational Project Managers, the Superintendent Exploratory Mine Operations will be instrumental in establishing and overseeing the establishment and ramp up of operations of an Exploratory Mine in Morocco that is targeting 3MT per annum production within the next 12-18 months, and 9MT pa in the year thereafter. This will involve guiding client’s line managers and support staff through the setup and management of the mine, ensuring that it operates in line with Fortescue's high operational standards. By applying Fortescue’s proven methodologies and technologies, the superintendent will help improve performance outcomes, delivering high levels of productivity and environmental performance to match Fortescue’s world-renowned benchmarks.
Specific accountabilities include guiding client operations teams in how to:
- Help ensure client has adequately trained and competent supervisory and operational staff for Exploratory Mine at Fortescue standards.
- Ensuring Traffic Management Plan is fully implemented to design
- Assist deployment of Operations SOPs and process in place for compliance including - Traffic Management, Radio comms, 50:20:10 clearance zones, Hierarchy of control, 100m wide benches
- Help OCP mining line managers to drive 95%+ adherence to Design and Schedule - daily, weekly and monthly
- Help drive operating processes and ways of work to target loading unit OEE of >70% on ramp up to 6200 hours (normalized to Fortescue)
- Help implement operating processes and ways of work to target OEE of >75% for Truck units on ramp up towards 7200 hours excl charging (normalized to Fortescue)
- Operating processes/ways of work to target benchmark OEE for Drill units o Incorporate expert inputs to guide production rates for 400t &600t loading units with ramp up target: >6.6M m3 for 400t units, >10M m3 for 600t units
- Assist with operating interfaces for commissioning and ramp up of BWP, applying lessons learned from Fortescue ramp ups
- Integrate operational requirements for deployment of FMS and AHS · The role also involves collaborating with client teams to define project milestones, establish clear outcomes, and set key performance indicators (KPIs) to build mining skills, and to measure the success of the decarbonisation efforts.
- The Superintendent Exploratory Mine Operations will be responsible for helping to ensure these targets are met while guiding client teams and managers through the challenges of adopting and implementing green mining practices and autonomation technologies. It will also involve working closely with the OEM and Fortescue Zero decarb AHS teams for deployment of green autonomous operations.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in relevant area (e.g. Engineering, Mining Engineering)
- Australian Quarry Managers certification · Line Leadership professional training
- 10+ years working in Mining Operations or Mining Projects including capital projects, equipment deployment, active operations, productivity uplift, blend and resource optimization, change management
- 7+ years experience in previous senior mining leadership roles
- Thorough understanding of mine safety
- Proven track record in supervising and leading operational people (with a focus on load and haul operations)
- Collaboratively interacting with Mine Planning and Maintenance
- Demonstrated earthworks technical application and continuous improvement practices using technology
- Cross-functional engagement and alignment
- Clear communication and problem-solving skills
- Passion for driving meaningful change
- Ongoing desire to learn and embrace stretch targets
