Our Opportunity
Location: Hedland Operations – Port Hedland (on the traditional lands of the Kariyarra people)
Roster: 4 days on / 4 nights on / 8 days off – Residential in Port Hedland or FIFO ex Perth

Fortescue’s Hedland Operations, on the traditional lands of the Kariyarra people, are the heartbeat of our rail network. We’re looking for an experienced Auto Mechanical Heavy Vehicle Technician to join our Locomotive team — someone who thrives on hands-on work, problem solving, and keeping the fleet moving safely and efficiently.
If you’ve worked on locomotives (ideally General Electric, Progress Rail, or Wabtec assets) and love the challenge of diagnostics and repairs in a fast-paced environment, we’d love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out routine servicing and mechanical repairs on locomotives.
- Using modern diagnostic equipment to identify and resolve faults.
- Ensuring every job meets the highest safety and quality standards.
- Recording all work, parts, and labour in SAP.
- Completing risk assessments before starting tasks.
- Working closely with your team to deliver efficient, on-time outcomes.
Qualifications and Experience
- Strong experience as an Auto Mechanical Technician — ideally with locomotives.
- Trade qualification in automotive or mechanical engineering.
- Hands-on knowledge of locomotive engines, diagnostics, and mechanical systems.
- Problem-solving skills, a keen eye for detail, and a strong safety mindset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a high-performing team.
