Fortescue is on a mission to fully decarbonise our Pilbara iron ore operations, and expanding renewable power infrastructure is at the core of making this bold transformation a reality. We’re building a future where electric haul trucks, green energy systems, and real-time optimisation redefine what’s possible in mining — and we’re looking for a Senior Energy Systems Engineer who can help make that future happen.

The Senior Energy Systems Engineer role is a Fortescue’s subject matter expert responsible for designing, modelling, analysing and optimising the integrated renewable power infrastructure required to decarbonise the entirety of Fortescue’s Pilbara “pit to port” mining value chain.

This includes the optimal design and operational strategies for “Pilbara-wide” power generation, storage & transmission infrastructure as well as each individual mine-site’s power distribution network that will supply energy to the electrified mining fleet.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing, coding & supporting simulation, modelling & analytical tools used to optimise the design and future operating strategies of Fortescue’s Pilbara-wide integrated energy balance and Fortescue’s mine-site distribution power networks
  • Performing techno-economic analysis with the integrated energy balance model(s) to support investment decisions including identify the optimal combination of technologies and capacity of infrastructure and equipment required for Fortescue Decarb
  • Performing system constraints, capacity & capability analysis for mine-site distribution power network design to inform ongoing infrastructure & equipment investment and re-deployment decisions.
  • Supporting the development of systems and tools for use by Fortescue Operations in Security Constrained Unit Commitment and Economic Dispatch (SCUC/SCED) decisions and control in the transition to a grid with very high penetration of variable renewables.
  • Transferring knowledge and capability into other Fortescue functions to support ongoing development and operation of Fortescue’s renewable power infrastructure

Qualifications and Experience

  • A strong technical understanding of renewable energy power generation and power demand in a remote mining context, including factors determining variability (highly desirable)
  • Experience in modelling and analysing time usage models or equivalent in a power system or mining context (highly desirable)
  • Experience in working with industry standard Power system models such as PLEXOS and power system engineering tools such as Power Factory (highly desirable)
  • Strong capability to program in Python or an equivalent software language appropriate for analytical application development
  • Familiarity with relevant database technologies for operational data in a mining and energy context
  • Familiarity with optimisation techniques and tools appropriate for optimising models and simulations of dynamic systems
  • Degree qualified engineer, ideally in an electrical domain (mining/chemical/process or mechanical also encouraged to apply)
  • +5 years industry experience, ideally in mining and/or power grid operations or design
