Fortescue are currently looking for an experienced Data Engineer to design, build, and optimize scalable data systems using modern cloud and data engineering practices. You will develop robust data architectures and pipelines that provide curated, analytics-ready data for Data Analysts, Data Scientists, and business teams. 

 

 

This role requires close collaboration with the Analysts, Data Scientists, the Offshore team, and broader business stakeholders to deliver data-driven solutions that enable actionable insights. As a senior member of the team, you will also mentor offshore team members, providing guidance on best practices in technology, coding standards, and solution design.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Architect and optimise scalable data pipelines from development to production, ensuring performance, reliability, and alignment with defined use cases
  • Develop and maintain robust data provisioning frameworks, applying engineering best practices to deliver timely, accurate, and reliable data products
  • Implement secure and compliant data storage solutions, embedding governance, protection, and data quality controls across all environments
  • Drive automation and metadata management, using AI-enabled tools to streamline data preparation, integration, and schema monitoring for improved productivity
  • Design, build, and maintain cloud infrastructure leveraging AWS services (Lambda, Step Functions, S3, RDS, EC2) and infrastructure-as-code tools such as AWS CDK and Terraform
  • Manage and optimise Snowflake environments, enabling secure, scalable, and high-performing data storage and retrieval
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions, ensuring robust testing, secure deployments, and adherence to engineering and DevOps best practices
  • Collaborate across data, analytics, and business teams, supporting governance initiatives, documentation standards, and seamless knowledge transfer across distributed teams
  • Lead and mentor engineers, conducting peer reviews, guiding offshore teams, and fostering continuous improvement in coding standards and technology adoption
  • Design secure API integrations and lightweight data applications, leveraging REST APIs and frameworks like Streamlit to enhance accessibility and data-driven decision-making.

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience in large-scale data engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with proven expertise in designing, building, and optimising scalable, high-performance data pipelines
  • Advanced proficiency in cloud-based data solutions, particularly AWS, including infrastructure design, deployment, and optimisation for data workloads
  • Expert in SQL and Python, with deep experience in data modelling, advanced querying, performance tuning, pipeline automation, and orchestration
  • Hands-on experience with Snowflake, covering administration, optimisation, and seamless integration within complex data ecosystems
  • Strong grasp of DevOps/DataOps principles, including CI/CD, Git/GitHub, GitHub Actions, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, AWS CDK), and automated pipeline delivery
  • Practical understanding of security, compliance, and data governance standards, ensuring enterprise-grade integrity and regulatory alignment
  • Experience with BI and analytics tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Spotfire) and application of visualisation best practices for data storytelling and insight generation
  • Proven success working across diverse environments — cloud, on-premises, and hybrid — with a strong understanding of system integration and deployment scalability
  • Excellent communicator and mentor, skilled at documentation, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration within Agile frameworks (Scrum, SAFe, DSDM); mining and resources sector experience highly regarded.
