Work Location: Perth - Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people.

 

Roster: Monday to Friday

 

Fortescue is currently operating five mine sites, a port facility and rail network, and is expanding into projects across Australia and overseas. In addition, the company has set impressive targets to decarbonise its operations by 2030 and become a world leader in green steel production.

 

The Water Engineering Team plays an important role in addressing Fortescue’s surface water management and water systems engineering challenges for new studies, projects and existing operations.  We are looking for a Project Water Engineer / Hydrologist to come on board to support a growing portfolio of projects.

 

This position offers the successful candidate a unique opportunity to develop professionally across various aspects of the resource sector. The role will be Perth-based but includes opportunities for site work, and will be reporting to the Principal Hydrologist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake technical analysis to support the investigation, approval and development of new resources. This includes modelling to establish hydrological and hydraulic conditions to understand flood risk, support impact assessments, and inform surface water management
  • Provide necessary surface water inputs to achieve key objectives across various stages of project development including scoping study, prefeasibility study, feasibility study, detailed design, construction, operation and closure
  • Provide technical support, in a planning capacity, to project delivery, operations and mine planning in relation to surface water management at our operational sites
  • Raise awareness of flood risk and surface water management requirements to all stakeholders, and support annual wet season preparedness activities
  • Attend site when required to participate in surface water investigations, monitoring programs and other site-based activities such as stakeholder consultation
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders, such as heritage advisors, environmental advisors, hydrogeologists and mine site personnel

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or other relevant discipline
  • 3+ years relevant experience
  • Robust understanding of catchment hydrology, river hydraulics and flood estimation
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of flood modelling tools/software (TUFLOW and RORB) and supporting spatial GIS tools/software (ArcGIS; QGIS; Global Mapper). Python skills for simulation and automation tasks desirable
  • Practical experience in surface water management, including conceptual design of drainage and flood mitigation infrastructure
  • Excellent report writing skills including experience using Microsoft Office (or equivalent)
  • Effective communication and time management skills
  • Commitment to health and safety, and promoting positive team behaviour / supportive culture
  • Western Australian Driver’s Licence
