The role of the Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Assurance is responsible for providing geotechnical risk management assurance and support across Fortescue operations, ensuring ground control hazards are identified and that mitigating and preventative controls are implemented and effective.

 

This represents Fortescue on matters relating to tailings management governance, sustainability, and compliance, at times requires communicating complex technical information to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. The role also supports the Assurance team in relation to slopes, cavity and inrush major hazard management governance.

 

Strong, practical, operational capability in monitoring systems, operational procedures, management plans and standards, and auditing is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide governance of tailings risk management, ensuring systems are implemented to identify, assess and effectively control hazards.
  • Support operations to ensure that hazards are identified, risks are assessed and that personnel understand their accountabilities.
  • Lead development and maintenance of continuous assurance risk management dashboards and reporting.
  • Conduct subject matter expert led second line assurance testing to verify implementation and effectiveness of critical controls.
  • Assess and implement emerging technologies in ground control management.
  • Provide technical advice and consultation with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure ground control assurance activities across Fortescue align with business objectives by providing oversight, mentoring, review, and guidance to operations.
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with business units and external parties, contribute to knowledge building and awareness, influence decision making regarding ground control management.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A degree, or equivalent tertiary qualification, in Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Strong experience in operational ground control management across a range of commodities and functions.
  • Demonstrated experience in risk management processes, including implementation and operation.
  • Experience with data management and visualisation systems including Power BI and Snowflake.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a demonstrated experience of engaging with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Strong team skills and willingness to travel for short periods.
