Our Opportunity

Work Location: Perth - Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people.

Roster:  Monday to Friday, 5:2 roster with site travel as needed

Reporting to the Principal Geometallurgist, the role will require you to coordinate, promote and integrate geometallurgy across interdisciplinary teams to maximise value while minimising technical and operational risk.

The successful applicant will integrate geological context into metallurgical performance to understand how material behaves when transformed by mining and processing to assist with metallurgical regression development, minimise financial risk, and further improve plant performance.

You will have access to multiple techniques to understand the orebody ranging from corescale (hylogger, downhole logging, assays and FTIR) to the microscale (optical microscopy, SEM, uXRF) which you will use to link to material properties such as comminution (BBWi, SMC,HPGR,Stirred Milling), abrasivity, elutration, upgrades and yields.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret metallurgical testwork data from the PQ drilling to assess the impact of geology on upgrades and yields during processing.
  • Communicate the findings and analysis to the stakeholders within the company.
  • Design, evaluate and optimise the testwork flowsheet for various metallurgical testwork programs to understand comminution, abrasion, liberation and other handling properties of the material.
  • Assess the quality and consistency of the metallurgical test work.
  • Interface with metallurgical and analytical labs to ensure that the test work is fit for purpose and delivered on time.
  • Regular travel to sites to inspect ore body and aid the OPF by providing insights into expected processing behavior.

Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in Geology, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Data Science, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety with a strong attitude towards HSEC, including hazard reporting, investigations, and field interactions.

  • 5 to 12 years of experience in mineral processing or a similar industry, with practical alignment to real-world applications.

  • Strong conceptual thinking and analytical skills, combined with excellent problem-solving abilities and a continuous improvement mindset.

  • Good project management capabilities, including cross-functional collaboration.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing and process documentation.

  • A strong desire to innovate, problem solve, and approach work with fresh ideas.

Desirable Skills

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python.

  • Understanding of geometallurgical systems of work and related methodologies.

  • Prior experience with OPF (Ore Processing Facility) operations.
