Senior Process Engineer

Work Location: Balcatta, Perth – Fortescue’s green iron research & development facility is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people
Roster: Monday to Friday
In support of Fortescue’s focus on green energy and carbon neutrality targets, one of our key initiatives is the production of green iron ore and steel.
Reporting to the R&D Engineering Design Manager, we are looking for a Senior Process Engineer to join the Research and Development team to develop process designs for green iron production, supporting implementation from pilot through to commercial scale. Candidates must be able to bring a flexible mindset, challenge traditional thinking, and be prepared to work outside of their comfort zone.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading the process engineering design and testing of pilot scale electrochemical and mineral processing facilities
- Leading the development of flowsheet concepts, simulation, H&MBs, PFDs, P&IDs, operating and control philosophies, equipment data sheets, and any required process studies to be undertaken
- Developing technical specifications / basis of design for process systems
- Designing, sizing, and selecting equipment
- Define, manage, and analyse metallurgical testwork programs with external commercial labs
- Engaging and managing contractors, equipment vendors and technical specialists as required including preparing detailed scopes of work
- Acting as key engineering interface with R&D scientists to tailor experiments such that laboratory results can be used to design and operate engineering scale facilities
- Development and maintenance of Techno Economic Assessment for the Green Iron process
- Mentoring multi-disciplinary technical team of engineers and scientists including making design decisions and resolving technical issues
- Uphold Safety and Process Safety principles through inherent safety in design, subject matter expertise, and technical leadership
- Ability to work across multiple work fronts in a fast-paced environment and adapt to new requirements to meet aggressive stretch targets
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor of Engineering or the equivalent in Chemical or Process Engineering or Metallurgy
- Minimum 10 years industry experience
- Industry experience in either metallurgy and mineral processing or industrial chemical processing
- Experience in FEED and detailed design including equipment sizing / selection, simulations, and preparing PFD, P&ID, H&MB, relief calculations and hydraulic calculations
- Experience in SysCAD would be highly regarded
- Experience in R&D, commissioning / startup, and pilot plant operation would be highly advantageous
- Experience as Lead Process Engineer for HAZID, HAZOP, and LOPA
- Enthusiastic in creating new and unique ideas and strategies
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a dynamic team
- Well-developed interpersonal skills in building rapport and maintaining stakeholder relationships
