Work Location: Perth - Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people.

 

Roster: Monday to Friday

 

Fortescue is currently operating five mine sites, a port and rail facility, and is expanding into projects across Australia and overseas. In addition, the company has set impressive targets to decarbonise its operations by 2030 and become a world leader in green steel production. 

 

The Water Engineering Team plays an important role in addressing Fortescue’s surface water management and water systems engineering challenges for the company.  We are looking for a Senior Water Engineer to come on board to support a growing portfolio of projects.  

 

This position offers the successful candidate a unique opportunity to develop professionally across various aspects of the resource sector. The role will be Perth-based but includes opportunities for site work, and will be reporting to the Principal Water Engineer.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and project-manage technical studies in surface water and water systems to support the regulatory approval process and various phases of engineering studies for new development projects
  • Provide technical support on surface water and water systems infrastructure, in a planning capacity, to mine planning, project delivery, operations and closure planning at our operational sites
  • Support obtaining and maintaining water approvals across all relevant legislations
  • Attend site when required to execute surface water investigations, monitoring programs and participate in stakeholder consultation
  • Raise awareness of flood risk and surface water management to all stakeholders, and facilitate annual wet season management activities
  • Contribute to process improvement and technical mentorship to junior team members
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with other functions of the business to promote and build awareness of water management.

Qualifications and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or other relevant discipline 
  • Demonstrated relevant experience  
  • Understanding of catchment hydrology, river hydraulics, flood modelling, and use of modelling tools/software (TUFLOW and RORB) and supporting spatial GIS tools/software 
  • Understanding of approvals processes relating to surface water management in mining, preferably in a Western Australian setting 
  • Strong project management/delivery skills in water-in-mining settings 
  • Excellent engagement, critical thinking and influencing skills
  • Western Australian Driver’s Licence 

Desired: 

  • Understanding and experience in Civil drainage design and associated software  
  • Understanding of water infrastructure systems, pipes and pump design, and related software
