Work location: Perth (50%) / All Pilbara sites (50%) – Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people
Roster: 5D/2R/4D/3R (Mon-Fri in Perth, then 4D/3R rotating around all sites)

 

An exciting opportunity exists for a Systems Geologist to join our Resource Definition team. This role is pivotal in driving the integration and optimisation of geological data management systems, GIS workflows, and the standardisation of data collection methods and analysis processes across our operations.

 

As a Systems Geologist, you will be responsible for implementing and improving systems within the Resource Definition team while managing project-based workloads aligned with the Geology Projects roadmap. A core part of the role will involve developing and maintaining GIS workflows, conducting gap analyses, and identifying opportunities to streamline and strengthen existing processes.

 

The position also provides the chance to help shape Resource Definition’s next-generation data management capabilities. You will play a key role in building new systems that leverage emerging technologies such as AI, machine learning, while ensuring that IT security best practices are maintained.

 

This role acts as a critical link between site-based field teams and Perth-based IT teams, translating operational challenges into technical solutions that deliver real value. To succeed, you will need strong stakeholder engagement skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and a passion for driving change through technology and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and maintain of current geological and field data management processes.
  • Develop, maintain and optimise GIS based workflows and processes to support Resource Definition operations.
  • Coordinate and manage system changes across multiple sites, ensuring seamless implementation with minimal operational disruption.
  • Create and maintain procedures and documentation for systems based project deliverables.
  • Present system changes to key stakeholders to our site teams, providing clear communication of impacts, benefits, and implementation timelines.

  • Support end users and manage service tickets through platforms like Jira Service Management.
  • Evaluate and pilot new technologies including machine learning, automation, remote sensing, and spatial analytics.
  • Ensure team operations adhere to IT security processes and policies while promoting best practices.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Geology, Information Systems, Geoscience, or related field.
  • Minimum 3+ years' experience in GIS, drilling, mining/metals, or oil and gas industries.
  • Practical experience with relational and spatial databases (SQL, Snowflake, SQLite, geodatabases).
  • Applied knowledge of GIS and spatial data management systems.
  • Programming and development skills with proficiency in Python (highly regarded).
  • Strong understanding of IT methodologies, systems and processes.
  • Experience with drilling methodology and/or geological data collection would be advantageous.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to liaise professionally with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong time management and project management skills with ability to work independently on concurrent projects.
