Senior Rolling Stock Engineer
Our Opportunity
Work Location: Perth or Port Hedland (with regular ad-hoc site travel across the Pilbara)
Roster: Monday to Friday
As the senior technical authority for rolling stock in the Risk, Assurance and Safety team, you’ll provide independent, second-line assurance that Fortescue’s locomotive, wagon and on-track plant fleets are managed safely, reliably and in line with Fortescue engineering standards, risk appetite and statutory obligations.
Reporting to the Principal Rail Engineer – Asset Assurance, you are the custodian of the Rolling Stock Integrity Management Procedure and will lead technical assurance across maintenance strategies, inspection regimes, modification controls, risk verification, incident investigations and capital review—translating complex engineering and risk concepts into clear, practical expectations for site teams and leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and govern the Rolling Stock Integrity Management Procedure as the application of the Asset Integrity Standard to rolling stock assets
- Provide independent assurance that rolling stock maintenance, inspection, modification and integrity requirements meet minimum engineering and safety expectations
- Optimise risk-based maintenance and inspection strategies and verify critical controls and treatments are effective in practice
- Review and challenge rolling stock risks, changes, concessions and deviations; lead/participate in risk workshops for projects and major modifications
- Provide independent technical input to incidents/events, including evidence review, failure analysis, root cause and corrective actions
- Conduct independent technical reviews of rolling stock capital and operational expenditure proposals; support prioritisation using risk, condition and performance data
- Support development and authorisation of rolling stock standards, specifications and technical procedures, embedding lessons learned into practical expectations
- Interface across maintenance, operations, compliance and projects; mentor engineers/maintainers in sound risk-based engineering
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Mechatronic or related Engineering discipline (mandatory)
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or working towards (highly regarded)
- Significant experience in rolling stock engineering (heavy haul or similar environments)
- Demonstrated experience in asset integrity, reliability or asset management for complex mechanical systems
- Strong working knowledge of rolling stock design, maintenance and modification standards and procedures
- Experience with incident investigation, root cause analysis and risk assessment
- Proven ability to influence and build credibility with operational teams (senior technical specialist; no direct reports)
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills across maintenance, operations, projects, OEMs and regulators
