Mining Engineer - Medium Term Planning Specialist
Our Opportunity
Location: Fortescue Centre - 256 St Georges Tce, Perth. This role will be based onsite for the first 3 months to ensure familiarisation with the Solomon operation
Roster: Monday to Friday, 7.6 hours per day
Fortescue are seeking a highly motivated Mining Engineer – Medium Term Planning Specialist to join our Perth-based Mine Operations Planning team, supporting our Solomon operation. This role provides specialist technical expertise across the medium-term planning horizon, with a strong focus on enabling complex mining and decarbonisation projects to be executed safely, efficiently and seamlessly.
Solomon presents a dynamic planning environment, including a range of decarbonisation initiatives, Kings Void and Blacksmith projects, which require a high level of initiative, technical depth and attention to detail. Reporting to the Senior Mining Engineer – Medium Term Planning, the Specialist will act as a trusted technical authority, supporting complex design, planning and problem-solving activities across the operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality medium-term mine designs and planning inputs, including pits, waste dumps, stockpiles and infrastructure (roads, ROMs, drains, levees and decarb-related works) to support operational and project execution requirements.
- Provide technical insights and options to project delivery teams to complex or non-standard planning challenges, including Kings Void, Blacksmith project and decarbonisation projects.
- Analyse and provide insights to mine designs and sequences that maximise ore recovery, manage risk and minimise cost, while aligning with long-term strategic plans and operational constraints.
- Ensure all designs and planning outputs comply with Fortescue Design Standards, statutory requirements and site-specific constraints.
- Work closely with Medium Term Planners to ensure spatial, sequencing and execution alignment across the planning horizon.
- Provide technical guidance and design support to Operations Planning and site operational teams.
- Proactively engage with key stakeholders including Mining, Geology, Drill & Blast, Geotechnical, Decarb, Hydrogeology and Surface Water to identify risks, opportunities and mitigation strategies within the mine plan.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or similar
- Proficiency in Vulcan mine design software.
- Proficiency in Alastri software suite desired.
- Demonstrated experience in open pit design (preferred) and scheduling.
- Self-starter, can run autonomously and display initiative.
- Excellent communication/presentation skills with the ability to convey technical detail, potential risks, and opportunities within the planned works to a variety of stakeholders.
