Our Opportunity
Location: Various Fortescue sites across the Pilbara
Duration: 12-month contract or secondment
Roster: 8/6 preferred, 4/3 can be considered – flexibility for travel across Pilbara operations is essential
This is a unique opportunity to combine Safety and Risk within one role, offering broad exposure across operational safety, risk management, assurance, and continuous improvement within Integrated Operations.
Reporting to the Principal Safety, with a dotted line to the Principal Risk, you will partner closely with operational leaders and frontline teams to strengthen risk management capability, improve organisational learning, and support safe and reliable performance across multiple sites and functions.
This is not a purely transactional compliance role. We are looking for someone who can work autonomously, build trusted relationships, influence leaders, and bring a practical, forward-thinking approach to safety and risk. The successful candidate will be comfortable leading conversations, constructively challenging where required, and helping teams understand how strong risk management and learning-focused safety practices support operational success.
The Specialist must be available to work on-site at various locations across the Pilbara, as well as attend the Perth office when required. While every effort will be made to adhere to a set roster, flexibility is essential for success in this role.
The role offers variety, visibility, and the opportunity to make a genuine impact in a dynamic operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with leaders and frontline teams to strengthen safety and operational risk performance across Integrated Operations and foster a proactive, learning-oriented safety culture
- Coach and support teams to build confidence and capability in operational risk management, assurance activities, and organisational learning
- Facilitate risk reviews, workshops, and control verification activities that improve understanding and effectiveness of critical controls
- Support investigations and learning reviews with a focus on identifying opportunities for improvement and strengthening system resilience
- Drive implementation and continuous improvement of Safety and Risk Management Systems
- Monitor risk controls, assurance activities, and obligations to ensure risks are understood and managed effectively
- Identify trends, gaps, and improvement opportunities through engagement with operational teams and field interactions
Qualifications and Experience
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Safety, Risk, Engineering, or related disciplines
- Experience in Safety, Operational Risk, or integrated safety and risk roles within mining, resources, or other high-risk industries
- Strong understanding of operational risk management, critical controls, safety systems, and assurance practices
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and lead outcomes in dynamic operational environments
- Strong facilitation, coaching, and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence at all levels, including experience supporting ICAM investigations, risk reviews, and assurance activities
- Ability to analyse complex information and provide practical, risk-informed recommendations
