Our Opportunity
Work Location: Perth Office – Fortescue's Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people. International and site travel may be required.
Roster: Monday to Friday
We are seeking a Material Qualification Specialist to join Fortescue's Aftermarket team. Reporting to the Project Manager Aftermarket, you will be responsible for assessing, testing and qualifying parts, materials, components, and consumables for use across our Aftermarket operations. Working closely with Aftermarket, Supply Chain, Asset Management, China Operations and suppliers, you will lead qualification activities from initial assessment through to implementation, supporting safe, reliable and commercially sound decisions that reduce operating costs without compromising performance and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and lead material, component and supplier qualification activities from initial assessment through trials, validation, approval and implementation.
- Develop trial plans, testing methods, acceptance criteria and evidence requirements in collaboration with operational and technical stakeholders.
- Coordinate field trials, inspections, testing and performance monitoring, ensuring accurate and traceable documentation.
- Assess alternative materials, components and suppliers for technical compliance, reliability, operational suitability, lifecycle costs and supply risks.
- Prepare evidence-based qualification recommendations, including identified risks, limitations, implementation requirements and controls.
- Collaborate with procurement, supply, inventory and systems teams to implement qualified materials into supplier arrangements, inventory strategies and ERP systems.
- Support change management activities and early-life performance monitoring for newly introduced materials and components.
- Investigate trial failures and performance concerns, coordinating corrective actions, additional testing and escalation where required.
- Provide technical guidance to site teams and stakeholders on material qualification requirements and outcomes.
- Drive standardisation, continuous improvement and best practices across material qualification processes.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum five years' experience in material qualification, quality assurance, engineering, reliability, maintenance, asset management, product validation or a related technical discipline.
- Demonstrated experience planning, coordinating and managing technical trials, testing or qualification activities.
- Strong technical judgement with the ability to evaluate evidence, identify risks and develop practical, commercially sound recommendations.
- Experience working within mining, heavy industry or other asset-intensive operational environments is highly regarded.
- Tertiary qualification in Mechanical, Materials, Metallurgical or Quality Engineering, or a related engineering discipline is highly desirable.
- Understanding of material and component failure mechanisms, including wear, abrasion, corrosion, fatigue and thermal effects.
- Experience with SAP or similar enterprise asset management, reliability, material traceability or master data systems is advantageous.
- Knowledge of relevant technical standards, including AS/NZS, ASTM and ISO, and their application to qualification or assurance activities.
- Experience engaging with suppliers, procurement and strategic sourcing teams to assess and qualify alternative products or supply solutions.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, organisational, analytical and communication skills, with a commitment to safety, technical integrity and continuous improvement.
