Mining Engineer - Mine Planning Specialist

Our Opportunity

Work Location : Fortescue’s Cloudbreak mine is located on the traditional lands of the Palyku and Nyiyaparli peoples.

Roster: 4D/3R  or 8D/6R– FIFO ex Perth 

We are seeking a highly motivated Mining Engineer – Mine Planning Specialist to join our Cloudbreak Mines Operations Planning team.

Reporting to the Superintendent – Medium Term Planning, the successful candidate will provide specialist mine planning expertise across short and medium-term planning horizons.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing practical, integrated and high-quality mine plans that support safe, efficient and reliable operations at Cloudbreak. This includes mine design, scheduling, scenario analysis, planning assurance, risk identification and continuous improvement of planning processes and outcomes.

This role requires strong technical, analytical and interpersonal skills to solve complex mine planning problems, build effective relationships with planning, operations and technical stakeholders, and clearly communicate planning risks, constraints and priorities to both technical and non-technical teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Developing, reviewing and maintaining mine designs and schedules across weekly, monthly and quarterly planning processes.
• Working closely with short-term and medium-term planning teams to ensure plans are integrated, practical, achievable and aligned with operational requirements.
• Coordinating technical inputs from dewatering, geology, geotechnical, hydrogeology, drill and blast, survey, heritage, environment, maintenance and operations.
• Leading complex scenario analysis, trade-off studies and optimisation work to identify risks, opportunities and the best-value planning outcomes.
• Reviewing planning assumptions, design parameters and scheduling priciples to improve plan quality, consistency and deliverability.
• Identifying mine planning risks, constraints and dependencies early, and developing practical mitigation actions.
• Providing specialist technical advice, peer review and quality assurance for key mine planning deliverables and decisions.
• Monitoring performance against plan, supporting reconciliation and identifying actions to improve planning accuracy and operational execution.
• Leading mine planning improvement initiatives, including better workflows, standards, systems, data use and planning tools.
• Mentoring and coaching planners to strengthen technical capability, judgement and consistency across the team.

Qualifications and Experience

• Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or a related discipline.
• Significant experience in open pit mine planning, preferably in large-scale iron ore operations.
• Strong understanding of short and medium-term mine planning processes.
• Strong experience in mine design, scheduling, optimisation and integrated planning.
• High level of proficiency with industry-standard mine planning software and data analysis tools.
• Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and convert analysis into practical operational plans.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence outcomes and communicate complex planning matters clearly.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor others, lead improvement initiatives and strengthen planning capability.
• Operational mining experience in a multidisciplinary site-based environment would be advantageous.
