Our Opportunity

 

Work Location:  Perth, CBD.  Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

 

Roster:  Monday to Friday

 

** This is a full time, permanent role but open to conversations around part-time options **

The key mission of this role is to help transform how Fortescue’s operations plan, coordinate and make decisions through practical and responsible AI solutions.  Working across one of the world’s largest vertically integrated mine, rail and port operations, this role will contribute to safer, more efficient and more sustainable operations at global scale.

 

The successful candidate will bring strong technical capability, curiosity and a collaborative mindset to solving real-world operational challenges.  You will work closely with cross-functional teams to design, develop and deliver AI systems that create measurable business value.

 

This role also provides an opportunity to mentor others, contribute to data science capability uplift across Fortescue and help shape the future of AI within our business.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Lead the design, development and implementation of prediction and forecasting methods for Supply Chain AI systems
  • Help identify, quantify and validate efficiency and productivity opportunities using data from a wide range of operational sources
  • Partner closely with Product Owners, engineers and operational stakeholders to deliver practical AI solutions
  • Establish and maintain best practices for responsible model development, testing and validation
  • Stay informed on developments in AI and machine learning and apply emerging techniques where appropriate
  • Communicate the value, impact and approach of AI systems to a broad range of stakeholders, including senior leadership
  • Mentor and support junior data scientists and contribute to the growth of data science and AI capability across Fortescue
  • Foster collaborative ways of working across multidisciplinary and diverse teams

Qualifications and Experience

 

Essential

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary and diverse teams
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong practical experience in statistics and machine learning, including forecasting, experimentation and model evaluation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability with an interest in modelling real-world systems
  • Significant experience delivering data science and machine learning solutions in complex operational or enterprise environments
  • Strong programming capability in Python or similar languages
  • Experience mentoring, coaching or supporting the development of others

 

Desirable

  • Experience in supply chain planning, forecasting or optimisation
  • Experience in mining, heavy industry or large-scale operational environments
  • Familiarity with platforms such as Snowflake, AWS or Databricks
  • Exposure to Generative AI technologies and optimisation problems
  • Relevant qualifications and/or equivalent industry experience in data science, machine learning, statistics, engineering or related fields
