Our Opportunity
Fortescue is accelerating the global transition away from fossil fuels through large-scale renewable energy deployment and deep decarbonisation initiatives.
The Principal – Energy and Sustainability Studies will lead and support in-country technical, market and sustainability assessments to inform Fortescue’s renewable energy strategy in Morocco.
The role will focus on energy system modelling, renewable resource studies, grid integration analysis, sustainability frameworks and carbon strategy to support investment decisions and long-term portfolio development.
This is a technical and strategic role requiring strong analytical capability, energy expertise, and the ability to engage credibly with government, regulators and strategic partners.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead comprehensive energy market assessments for Morocco, including regulatory structure, pricing mechanisms and reform trajectory.
• Support power system analysis including grid capacity, transmission constraints and integration studies for high renewable penetration.
• Assess renewable resource potential (wind, solar) and identify optimal development corridors.
• Evaluate storage requirements and system balancing needs under various penetration scenarios.
• Provide long-term energy transition outlooks aligned to national and regional decarbonisation pathways.
• Conduct techno-economic modelling and scenario analysis.
• Analyse grid connection pathways and transmission expansion requirements.
• Support internal investment cases with robust data-driven analysis.
• Support in-country ESG frameworks
• Conduct environmental and social risk assessments to inform site selection and strategy.
• Support strong community engagement and social licence frameworks at strategy stage.
• Contribute technical input into policy dialogue on:
o Grid integration
o Renewable capacity planning
o Market reform
o Transmission expansion
• Represent Fortescue in technical working groups and energy transition forums as required.
• Support integrated techno-economic models to inform capital allocation decisions.
• Identify key risks including:
o Regulatory risk
o Grid constraints
o Environmental and permitting risk
o Sovereign and political exposure
• Provide structured analysis to support Investment Committee and Board-level decisions.
• Develop strategic insights to guide long-term portfolio positioning in Morocco.
Qualifications and Experience
• Degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, Environmental Science, Economics or related discipline.
• Postgraduate qualification (Masters or PhD) preferred.
• Previous experience in renewable energy, power systems, energy economics, or sustainability advisory.
• Demonstrated experience conducting energy market studies and system modelling.
• Carbon markets and decarbonisation pathways
• Experience engaging with regulators or government agencies on technical matters.
• Experience in North Africa or broader MENA region.
• Experience supporting large-scale infrastructure projects.
• Experience in environment/land approval processes
