Work Location: Perth – Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people.

 

 

Roster: Monday to Friday

 

 

12-month fixed term or secondment

 

 

The water projects design engineer will be responsible for delivering detailed design deliverables associated with water infrastructure projects across Fortescue’s mine sites. The design engineer will take the lead role in compiling designs according to the relevant Australian and FMG standards in a safe and cost-effective manner.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Perform hydraulic modelling and design of pipelines, borefields, pump stations, ponds, tanks, and associated water infrastructure systems
  • Prepare comprehensive engineering work packages, including construction drawings, quantity estimates, scope definitions, and material take-offs (MTOs)
  • Develop detailed engineering deliverables such as pipeline schematics, general arrangements (GAs), P&IDs, and critical equipment selection documentation
  • Facilitate and participate in project design reviews, including field inspections, stakeholder requirement alignment, and compliance with basis of design criteria
  • Contribute to capital cost estimates through quantity calculations and technical input to budgeting processes
  • Coordinate operational readiness requirements to ensure smooth transition from design through to construction and commissioning
  • Provide construction-phase support by responding to technical queries (TQs) and updating design documentation as required
  • Produce equipment data sheets, evaluate vendor proposals, and ensure technical and budget compliance of procured equipment
  • Ensure all designs comply with statutory regulations, project standards, and industry best practices
  • Maintain clear communication of design progress, changes, risks, and issues while liaising effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering (preferred), or Chemical Engineering or Civil Engineering recognised by Engineers Australia
  • Minimum of 3-5 years mechanical piping systems and pipeline design experience, ideally within the mining industry and/or engineering consultancy experience
  • Previous experience in mine dewatering is considered beneficial
  • Clear communication skills, written and verbal
  • Understanding of discipline technology and other discipline requirements
  • Understanding of Australian and common international standards and regulatory authority requirements in the mining and water industries
  • Ability to travel to site if required (short trips for scoping and stakeholder engagement)
  • Ability to self-start and deliver on schedule and on budget
  • Competency in Visio, Arc map (preferable)
  • A problem-solving mentality with the ability to "think outside of the box"
